<body-html>
What is Marimekko?

In 1960, Jackie Onassis appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in one of Marimekko’s short, summery, flounced-hem dresses. Americans began falling in love with the Finnish design house’s clean, modern and cutting edge textile and fashion design in America. Last year, we all caught a glimpse of Marimekko’s bedlinens and wall hangings in the apartments of the Project Runway contestants. In 2007, Marimekko officially made it’s exciting retail comeback into the North American market with its fashion, textiles and housewares in Miami.

Marimekko is a brand that was established in the 1950s in Helsinki, Finland, with a strong focus on fashion and textile designs. Its signature Unikko poppy pattern has gained a strong brand identity across the globe, and the company continues to expand its fashion designs, textile designs and ready-made home goods and giftware for the design-conscious consumer. Marimekko’s rich world of patterns and colors offers a distinctive appearance for all types of interiors. It includes designs that are subdued and light, strikingly colorful, romantic and ornamental, or clean and architectonic. There are over 100 unique fabric designs available for a variety of uses.

Cristina Dominguez (Owner)

After years working as an attorney, Cristina Dominguez woke up one day and let her creative side change her life. Art, design and fashion were her true passions, and she had always dreamed of starting her own retail store. And even though she was living in Washington, D.C., she knew that Marimekko’s bright and bold prints and fashions would be perfect for Miami. So she cold-called Helsinki, and found out that Marimekko was about to re-launch its brand through a major North American expansion. Her timing was perfect. In December 2006, Cristina opened Marimekko Miami, the second full-concept Marimekko store in the U.S., complete with a full-service Contract Division (Marimekko Miami Contract) to serve the trade industry. The store is already a hit with customers and the media.

Cristina is currently focused on building her customer base in Miami, but she plans to expand the Marimekko ‘empire’ with additional shops in Florida, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico over the next few years. But for now, she is enjoying the day-to-day challenges of her new career. She likes to say that she has more fun on her worst days at the store than she ever had on her best days as a lawyer!
cristina@marimekkomiami.com
</body-html>
